The New York City Free Clinic
The NYCFC, New York's only comprehensive free healthcare clinic, believes that high-quality healthcare is the right of all individuals. We provide at no cost to our patients the full range of healthcare services, including specialty referrals, counseling, patient education, social services, and screening and registration for public health insurance.
The NYCFC is an all-volunteer group of New
York University medical students,
undergraduates, physicians, and community
partners that provides comprehensive free
healthcare to New York?s uninsured. Located in
Manhattan?s Union Square, the
NYCFC is open 9am-3pm every
Saturday.
Since opening in March 2002, the
NYCFC has provided free
healthcare for more than 800 New
Yorkers through 1,500 patient
visits. The majority of our patients
come from Manhattan, Brooklyn,
and Queens. Yet in just the last year
the NYCFC saw patients from all
five boroughs and 30 of New York
City?s 34 communities.
The NYCFC differs sharply from
other New York area low-income health clinics
in two key ways. First, while most other clinics
operate on a ?sliding scale? fee based on patient
income, the NYCFC is truly free for all uninsured.
Secondly, the NYCFC is the only free clinic in
New York that offers specialty referrals free of
charge to its patients, providing the full range of
services as available to any insured patient.

Provider Volunteer Role
Volunteer physicians and other healthcare providers are the cornerstone of the NYCFC. Volunteer physicians treat an eclectic and disenfranchised patient population with a broad range of medical problems.
Volunteer physicians oversee a number of volunteer medical student clinical teams, each comprised of one clinical (MSIII or MSIV) and one preclinical (MSI or MSII) medical student. The clinical teams, in conjunction with the volunteer physician, assess the patients being seen and develop a treatment plan that may include follow-up visits, laboratory testing, prescriptions, or referrals to specialized care at Bellevue. The primary capacity of the physician volunteer during this time is to take a teaching role, guiding the medical student teams in assessing and providing adequate treatment or referral services for the patients.
The NYCFC operates every Saturday from 9am to 3pm. There is no required time commitment. Ideally, we prefer that volunteer physicians work about one 3-4 hour shift (half of the Saturday clinic session) per month so that they become familiar with how the clinic runs and build an effective working relationship with the students. However, we can appreciate the busy life of the physician and your commitment can be as much or as little as your interest and schedule allow.
Q: What kind of time commitment is involved for volunteers?
There is no required time commitment. Q: Will I be covered for malpractice while working at the clinic?
For physicians with their own, personal malpractice insurance, coverage is usually extended without additional fees to any work the physician does as a volunteer. In most cases, this simply requires that you contact your insurance company and notify them where and how often you will be volunteering.
For physicians unable to extend their malpractice coverage outside of their home institution, the Institute for Urban Family Health, our partner, will make arrangments for a third-party insurer to provide coverage while volunteering at the NYCFC. There is no fee incurred by the physician for this malpractice coverage. Arrangements are addressed during the credentialing process on a case by case basis.
